Genre: Adult Romance
Publication Date: December 13, 2013
Tour Host: Dreams Come True Promotions

I believe in love at first sight… because I am a mother.

Living a complete lie, holding on to a secret that could cost me the most important thing in my life was about to surface. I couldn’t breathe without Maddie. Maddie was my life. The saying about dying for your child is the absolute truth. The other things you would do are comparable to that of death. I know, I did those things. I did unthinkable things, all for Maddie. I continued the lie, the secrets with the one man who had no right. People say you always have options. That’s a lie. I had no choice. I did it all for her… for my Maddie.

5 STAR REVIEW BY TINA
I have to start off by saying I wasn’t sure if I wanted to read this book at first. I mean who would want to read a book about someone being raped? So my best friend & I decided we would read it at the same time & I have to say this book had my attention from the first page to the last. I literately didn’t want to put it down. I felt bad for Whitley & I wanted to choke Alex to death. How could a man be so insensitive, deceiving & manipulative. but yet so loving, caring & sweet at times. I wanted to hate Alex for what he did to Whitley but in the end I totally fell in love with him. A beautiful ending that I will always remember.
5 AWESOME STAR REVIEW BY JEN
All I can say is holy smokes!!!! I was so drawn in, I couldn’t put it down!! It was like watching a train wreck but u can’t look away!! Whitley was raped, then manipulated, bribed & twisted into being a “family”! Just when I thought it was going one way, it went a whole other direction!! I hated Alex so much! I wanted to kick him in the throat!!! I wanted to write him off but I couldn’t!! He was controlling, a complete ass but then he was sweet, caring, loving! No matter  what he loved them!! I was shocked & surprised with the turn of events in the end!! I actually had tears in my eyes!! Great job!!

Excerpt #1

“Papaw, you watch dis wif me?” Maddie asked, holding up her princess movie.

My dad stood and went to her. I instantly jerked my hand from Alex’s, giving him a dirty look. He smirked. I wanted to punch him.

“Papaw has a better idea. Why don’t you stay here with papaw and nana tonight and let mommy have an adult night?” he offered, smiling over at me.

Man, this sucked. I didn’t want his smiling approval. I didn’t want him to like Alex. How could he like Alex? Alex was a conspirator. He couldn’t like Alex.

“No Dad, Alex came here to spend the weekend with her,” I tried.

“Alex is going to take her away from me. Alex can deal with it,” my dad joked, with Alex.

“Its fine, sweetie. She can stay if she wants to,” Alex approved, smiling at me.

I got up to go to bathroom. I had to. I was going to vomit, on him! I leaned in to Alex, catching the smile on his face when he thought that I was going to play his make believe game and kiss him or something. “You’re going to a hotel,” I seductively whispered in his ear.

Excerpt #2

“What’s wrong, baby? Did you have a bad dream?”

“No. A gemin under my bed,” she assured me.

“A gemin?” I repeated, not sure what the heck she was talking about.

“Uh-huh, I go in your bed, K?”

I carried her back to bed with me and snuggled her little body close to mine.

“A gemin under you bed?” she asked.

“What is a gemin?” I asked, wondering if she knew herself.

She rolled to her back so she could demonstrate with her hands.

“It dat big,” she gestured. “Dem can’t have no water.”

“Oh, my God!” I said, sitting up, reaching for my phone. I didn’t care that it was after two in the morning.

“What the hell, Whit?” Jaron answered on the third ring. “Do you know what time it is?”

“YES! You freaking let her watch Gremlins?”

“They’re cute,” he said.

“They’re monsters. She’s three for God’s sake.”

“I’ll tell her they’re not real tomorrow. Sorry, I’ll see you tomorrow,” Jaron said, hanging up on me. Grrrr. I couldn’t believe he let her watch the Gremlins.

Excerpt #3

“I’m not your pawn. You can’t treat me like this,” I yelled drunk words, trying to make sense.

Alex walked back out wearing his jeans.

“I have never treated you like my pawn.”

“You think I’m young and stupid and I just have to do everything—”

My words were cut off by his lips on mine. He tossed me toward to the bed and jerked my shoes off, flinging them roughly across the room. I stared in shock as he unsnapped my jeans and pulled them crudely over my hips.

“Alex, stop. What are you doing?”

He didn’t listen. He ran his fingers between my legs, aggressively shoving two fingers inside of me, dragging them up my wet slit, to my clit, and back inside of me.

“You want me to stop, Whitley?”

“No,” I whimpered as he assaulted my throbbing clitoris.

I dropped from my elbows as he moved down and took me with his mouth, violating my clit with intense pleasure. I felt like I was going to faint. It was so powerful and concentrated. I didn’t think he was ever going to let me come. I would get so close. As soon as I would start to writhe my hips into his mouth, he would slow down.

“Ah, right there. Don’t stop,” I begged with a whimper.

As soon as I screamed out in unbelievable pleasure he was kissing me. This was so messed up. I just walked in on him fucking someone else, and now I was tasting my pussy on his mouth.

“Fuck me, Alex,” I pleaded, panting heavily in his mouth.

He pulled back and stared down at me.

“I’m not going to fuck you, Whitley. I’m going to make love to you, but not tonight. Not now. Do you know when I am going to make love to you?”

I couldn’t answer. I just stared wide eyed and shook my head.

“I’m going to make love to you when you tell me to make love to you. When you are not drunk. Have you ever had sex sober, Whitley?”

Writing is more than a passion for me. I write adult books, romance and erotica. I did recently try my hand at a young adult romance, but because of the gutter that my mind seems to fall into. It quickly went into rated R mode. I reside in Ohio. I love living in Ohio, except maybe the cold winters, and the snow, well maybe the hot summers too. Ah hell, I hate Ohio.

I love to push my limits in writing, fuel the senses and emotions of my readers. I have some great supporters and love them all dearly.

Title: Lie Next To Me (A Millionaire’s Love)
Author: Sandi Lynn
Release Date: February 17, 2014
Genre: New Adult, Contemporary Romance

oie_wnHzdlyzZAho

The pain was unbearable, but I had to keep moving. I had to keep running because, if I didn’t, he’d find me. I looked behind me as I ran through the streets; scared, alone, and in the dark as the mist of rain hit my face. There was no time to think, and there was no time to stop. My shoes were soaked as they sloshed through the puddles of the dimly lit streets.

My name is Rory Sinclair, and the night I was violently attacked was the night that changed my life forever. One man, a man named Ian Braxton, made it his mission to heal me, to save me, and to show me a world that previously had been only a dream to me.

Ian Braxton is far from perfect. He’s a self-absorbed, demeaning, arrogant, and womanizing millionaire. He makes it so easy to hate him, but so very hard to resist him. We’re from opposite sides of the spectrum. He comes from money and I come from poverty. When our worlds collide, his struggles become mine, and mine become his, leaving us with one question:

How much would you give up to be with someone who was meant to be yours?

As soon as I stepped through the door and into the kitchen, Ian grabbed me and pushed me up against the wall, holding my arms above my head. “Don’t turn your back on me, Rory. I’m sorry. I don’t think you’re trash. I think you’re broken and I can fix you,” he whispered in my ear.

His hot breath traveled down my neck and my body went into a near convulsion. I wanted him, but I knew if anything were to happen, it would destroy me. I would become too emotionally attached and when he got tired of me and moved on, I wouldn’t recover. He brought his face to mine as he stared into my eyes.

“I’m not broken. I’m shattered. I’m a million tiny pieces that would take longer than forever to piece back together. So please, do me the favor and don’t even try,” I whispered.

His grip on my arms lightened as he let go and took a step back, giving me one last look before he turned around and walked away. I stood and placed my hand on my neck where his hot breath had touched me. I took in a deep breath and walked upstairs. Tomorrow was the day I start my life over, alone.

Absolution by Amanada Dick-Blog Tour

A freak accident, a moment in time, and life changes forever. Stay or go – there’s no such thing as the easy way out. The accident wasn’t his fault but in the horrific aftermath, Jack’s actions may have possibly caused consequences he could never have foreseen. Consumed with guilt and unable to listen to reason, he takes the only option he believes is open to him: he disappears. Living a quiet life away from everyone he loves, he drops off the grid but the memories continue to haunt him.

Four years later, a funeral signals a homecoming fraught with tension as he finally forces himself to face up to the consequences of his actions. Betrayed and angry, his former best friend Callum wants nothing more than to see him disappear once again – for good this time. Meanwhile his ex-girlfriend Ally has moved on and he can see that his return is anything but easy for her. People change, life goes on and things are never as simple as they seem. The past has a habit of catching up with you when you least expect it.

Living with regret and guilt almost tore him apart, but there is no guarantee that trying to make amends will soothe his soul or help the people he loves the most.

Courage has many faces. Fighting for what you believe in, no matter what. Showing strength of mind and body when the cards are stacked against you. Rising to the challenge and playing through the pain.

And yet sometimes, courage means simply standing your ground.

excerpt

“You want to know if I told her about what happened that night.”

Callum glared at him, and Jack could tell he was on the right track.

“The answer is no, I didn’t. But why the hell didn’t you? You were there, you knew.”

“Because it wasn’t my place to tell her – it was yours.” Callum snapped.

“Jesus, Callum! You just let her think God knows what, all this time?”

“What the hell do you care what she thought! You weren’t here, remember? I didn’t tell her because what the hell would be the point?”

“What would be the point?” Jack repeated indignantly. “She would have known!”

“Known what? That you were a coward? She figured that one out for herself when she woke up and you were gone!”

Jack opened his mouth to speak, but Callum cut him off.

“Don’t you dare come back here and start blaming me or anyone else! No one told you to go – you made that choice yourself.” Callum hissed, eyes blazing. “You did the wrong thing then and by coming back now and stirring it all up again, all you’re doing is making it worse. You’re here for your own selfish reasons, not because of Tom or because of her!”

“I’m trying to make it right!” Jack insisted, heart racing.

“And how in the hell do you think you’re gonna do that?”

Jack stared at him dumbfounded, knowing that he had asked himself that question a million times and come up empty.

“She doesn’t need you anymore. The best thing you can do now is just crawl back into whatever hole you crawled out of and leave her be.”

Jack shook his head determinedly, his heart pounding. “No. I’m not going anywhere, not this time.”

Callum laughed scornfully. “That’s your master plan? Seriously?”

Jack glared at him in silence, his anger mounting.

“Oh come on – you gotta admit, that’s a reckless statement, especially for you.” Callum snorted derisively. “You disappear when the going gets tough, remember?”

Jack clenched his teeth so tight his jaw ached. “That’s not what happened and you know it.”

“Do I? Because that’s what it looked like from where I was standing!”

“You know damn well why I left!” Jack blurted out, his voice thunderous and desperate. “You knew what I did – you were there!”

“Yeah, I knew what you did – big deal! You were trying to save her life – she wouldn’t have blamed you!” he said hotly. “You did the wrong thing, Jack – you should’ve stayed.”

Jack stared at him, his heart racing. He thought about the relationship they used to have – how close they were. Like brothers. And now this; strangers – worse than that; enemies.

“I made a mistake.” he choked. “I won’t make that mistake again.”

Callum shook his head. He stood up straight and took a step backwards, eyeballing Jack as he forced his hands back into his pockets.

“Here’s the thing – you made your choice. Now you have to live with it, just like the rest of us. You can’t change what happened and if you stick around, you’re only gonna hurt her. Is that what you want?”

Jack opened his mouth to reply but Callum didn’t give him a chance.

“She was just starting to get her life back together, after everything she’s been through. Don’t rip it all apart again.” he pleaded quietly, clearly emotional. “Do the right thing this time – leave.”

Amanda Dick is a night-owl, coffee addict, movie buff and music lover.  She also writes.

Born in Opotiki, New Zealand, she is rather partial to dark chocolate and believes in the power of a good vanilla latte.  She has a passion for the colour green (particularly in clothes and gemstones) and insists there is nothing sexier than a man in a kilt.

She spent several months traveling around Europe in her late 20’s (there’s a story there – she’ll get around to writing it one day).  After ridding herself of her wanderlust, she met the love of her life (while working to pay off said wanderlust) in Edinburgh, Scotland.  They moved in together the week after their first date – so yes, she believes in love at first sight.  She also believes in Women’s Intuition and following your heart.

She writes on her trusty laptop, predominantly late at night, when it’s quiet and interruptions are few.  Most of all, she enjoys writing about human behaviour – love, loss, joy, grief, friendship and relationships in general.  She loves to put normal, everyday people into situations that will test their boundaries.  She is passionately curious about how we, as human beings, react when pushed to the edge.

After living in Scotland for five years, she has now settled back home in New Zealand, where she lives with her husband and two children.

Yessi Smith-Author Spotlight

Meet Yessi Smith
Author
I’m a Hispanic living in South Florida with my redneck husband
from Texas and our “half breed” son, who is actually the reason I started
writing again after years of celibacy. My son loves stories, but not the kind
you can read in an existing book. No, he’d rather make up a story, complete
with our own illustrations. So, thank you, Son, for igniting a flame I had let
go out.

I also live with two dogs: a neurotic Border Collie we call
Nitro and a midget Rottweiler named Nisa.
I have always found my sanctuary at the beach and in music and
writing. I wish I could write rhymes so I could become a famous rapper, but
rhyming is completely lost on me.

I have a Bachelor’s
degree in Business Management and a Master’s in Human Resource Management. I
have held several jobs, from picking up dog crap to upper management positions.
And now I am hoping to leave the business world behind so I can live full time
in a world that does not exist until I place my fingers on.

Synopsis
I want to tell you how
great my life was. How I lived without regrets. With constant laughter. Without
any tears. I want to tell you how I lived each moment to the fullest. How each
breath I took was fresh and full of life. With eagerness. Without any fear.
I want to tell you all
of that, but then my story would be masked with lies and not worth telling.
My life didn’t start
until I left my past. And I left everything. My mother, my friends, my name.
My new name, the name
everyone knows me by is Erin Lewis.
Four years after finding
the courage to leave her hometown in Alabama, Erin is finally happy with where
her life has led her. Not only is she secure in her environment, but the
relationships she has formed center her, making her forget how damaged she once

Looking up into her moist eyes I
pull her close to me. Our arms hug each other with a fierceness that’s getting
rid of every loose fragment of damage. We’re expelling each and every bad
memory and all the shit that’s fucked us up. “I don’t want to let you go. Can
we stay like this for a little while longer?” Her head nods on my shoulder as
she sinks deeper into our embrace.
“You feel incredible in my arms. I
never thought much about guardian angels, but I think you’ve been sent just for
me. Your arms wrapping around me make everything go away.”
Sam’s arms grip me with even more
vigor. I feel her breath and lips tickle my ear as she turns her head into the
crook of my neck. Feather light kisses touch my neck and earlobe as she
whispers; “You’re wrong Ben; you’re my angel. You make me believe that love can
exist.” Her head pulls back but her arms stay firmly in place. “Your voice
brought light into my life when all I could see was darkness. When I’m all
alone, it’s your voice that I hear when I drift off to sleep at night.”
I turn and press my lips onto hers
tenderly and hold them there for several seconds before breaking away. We stay
holding each other well into the night. Finally, her breaths change and I
realize she’s fallen asleep on my shoulder. I gently shift her body close and
place one arm underneath her legs to pick her up. She stirs slightly and turns
her head into the curve of my neck and inhales deeply. “Mmm, you smell so
good.”
I hold her against me as I chuckle,
“Oh yeah? It’s a combination of sweat, wine, and you.”
Sighing she lifts her head with her eyes still closed. “How
is it you know to say the exact thing a woman likes to hear?”
“I don’t know about that. I guess
you bring it out of me.”
We get into the truck, and I buckle
her up. I fight off the images of the accident and instead focus on Sam.  I listen to her steady breaths and watch her
sleep. She hypnotizes me.  I’m captivated
by her heart, beauty and soul. Her capacity to let me in is remarkable and
humbling especially when I don’t think I deserve it. Home has to feel a lot
like this because I can’t imagine living anywhere else.

Diary of a Dieter by Marie Coulson-Blog Tour

Curvy girl, Charlene Winters, had it all: the great career, wonderful friends and a dreamy fiancé. With her wedding day just three weeks away, Charlene is dealt a devastating blow. Suddenly finding her life, hopes and plans in tatters, the jilted bride sinks into despair and a tub of Ben and Jerry’s cookie dough. With the heartache of her fiancé’s infidelity still fresh, Charlene’s whisked away by her friends on a life-changing holiday. But how will this big fish cope now that she’s back in the dating pond and surrounded by slender trouts with Botox lips? Frustrated by best friend Adam thwarting her attempts at romance, and her girls Vanessa and Dana eager to set her up with a boy toy, Charlene decides the time for change is upon her. What she needs is a change of scenery, a change of dress size and maybe, a change of heart.

Born and bred in Essex, England, Marie Coulson discovered her love of writing in her early teens. Beginning with poetry and song lyrics, she tried her hand at creative writing while studying for her English GCSE. It was love at first line. Unfortunately, Marie’s career as a childcare and education practitioner soon took up most of her time and writing became something she only dreamed about. In the summer of 2012 she quit her job and enrolled at university, ready to start a new career as a therapist. This left her with a lot of time on her hands and on August the 20th she sat down and wrote the first chapter of Bound Together. Bound Together was a story that had been waiting three years to be written and when fingers hit the keyboard…Layla, Jared and Ollie’s story was born. Marie has since written and released two novels in the Bound Together series and a novella. Her romantic comedy novel Diary Of A Dieter has also received excellent reviews and is the debut novel in  the Confessions series.

REVIEW BY JENNY:
5 HILARIOUS STARS!!
Brilliant writing, hilarious characters, emotional connections, awesome story, relatable characters & situations, & lots of mouth open shocking moments, just to name a few! You will fall in love with Adam, relate to Charlene & her friends, & wish u were eating lunch with grandma because she’s such a character! Of course you’re going to be glad she’s not YOUR Gran because OMG I would be some embarrassed!! haha!

Charlene was the perfect lead role! She’s real! Not a size 0 little Miss perfect! No a healthy woman with real needs & real issues! Most of those involving a MAN! LOL Having her heart broken early on, Charlie’s on a mission to find happiness! To help her out are her Bff’s & her best friend, Adam. I’m not going to lie, I wanted to go through the book & shake her more than once!! I mean Adam is this super hot guy! Just make a move already!! LOL Just when we least expect it things go way wrong, which is always funny as hell, then way right(that makes you go “awwwww”!

I loved how this book had me LOL with Gran & her shenanigans to Charlene & her dating escapades one minute then having a tender moment with Charlie & her bff’s or Adam!! Amazing job Marie!! I can’t wait for “Confessions” #2!!
This book is A MUST read!!!-Jen

It’s been years since brilliant IT consultant Olivia James, fell for a man who had a deeply hidden compulsion to violence and control. Ethan is hesitant to believe at first, but there are things he can’t ignore. Things he couldn’t possibly know, but does. Neither of them can deny the dreams and memories that they both share, but Olivia is too afraid to believe and not willing to trust her heart.

Convinced that she is “THE ONLY ONE” for him, Ethan refuses to walk away, vowing that he will never give up on her, even if it means he has to fight hard enough for both of them. Can he control his temper and his needs in order to keep her in his life? Can she heal her past wounds and let him in? Like no other woman in his life, Olivia challenges him with her strong will and sharp sense of humor, making him wonder if she could ever become a willing captive of his dominance. Excerpt

Following, Ethan moves to her side, putting his hand against the trunk just above her head. His body pressing against her side makes her heartbeat quicker and her face flush.

Breathing in her perfume, he becomes intoxicated by its sweet, seductive scent and lifts his free hand, wrapping it around her waist holding her there. His incessant stare is daunting, forcing her to look down, trying to avoid it. Christ, this woman is so beautiful when she tries to hide the way he affects her.

Aware that his closeness makes her uneasy he presses his mouth against her ear and gently nips at her lobe. The warmth of his breath expelled heavily into her ear gives her goose bumps. Noticing her reaction, he moves his hand from her side and rubs up and down her arm trying to warm her. “Are you cold?” The muscles in her stomach tighten and her chest heaves as she inhales quickly.

“No.” She shakes her head.

“What then?” He knows what… he just needs to hear her say it.

She looks up at him through alluring hazel eyes. “You.”

“What about me?” Is it cruel that he needs her to confess? Torment her by making her say it aloud?

She lowers her eyes again and whispers. “I hate you.”

His hand stills on her arm and then moves back around her waist. His forehead pressed to the side of her temple he answers. “I don’t believe that’s true at all.” He slides his hand to her hip, tugging her as close to him as possible.

Bringing her hand to her mouth, she bites at her fingernails nervously. Her stomach twists in anxious knots as she lays out her feelings. “I hate the way you make me feel.” She concedes.

He inhales a deep breath and lets it breeze out warm and slow against her ear again. Finally he gets to the truth. Capturing her hand, he pulls it down, away from her mouth. Not feeling the need to control or overpower her in this moment his voice is gentle. “Look at me.”

Trembling with vulnerability, she turns so they’re chest to chest and raises her eyes, locking his gaze to hers, green to hazel, the soulful energy of their connection, ineffable.

“How do I make you feel?” His heart is beating with a strange wobble, nervous about her answer.

“Frightened.” She pauses and swallows hard, exhaling as she whispers. “Excited.” Her voice is full of shame at her admission.

“I see.” Lifting her hand to his mouth, he kisses each of her knuckles one at a time. Closing her eyes, she escapes his stare for just a few moments and gathers her thoughts before speaking again. “You make me feel like I’ve lost control… of my thoughts… my emotions.”

“Is that so bad?” He presses her palm to his chest so she can feel the rhythmic beating of his heart. “You’re not the only one who feels that way. The moment I saw you… my heart beat your name.”

Damn him and his ridiculously romantic side, she’s never going to survive it. “ I…I need to stay in control.” Her words are burdened by fear. His Irish brogue suddenly becomes thick and Irishy. “Sweetheart you are no more in control of what’s happening between us than I am. Whatever this is… it has its own destiny and we can merely follow its path, give in to its force… bend to its will.”

Olivia is lost. Lost in his eyes. Lost in his words. Under his spell… and hopelessly ALL IN. Moving his hands to her hips, he squeezes them, pulling her closer. When she’s pressed up against him, he lifts his hand to her face. Her breathing is shallow and her nerves tingle with the anticipation of his next move. Kiss me, just kiss me already.

When rock star River Wilde comes back into Dahlia’s life, their super-charged connection runs deeper than either of them ever expected. The more time they spend together, the more intense their relationship becomes, and Dahlia believes at last she has found her soul mate.

But as old bonds fade and Dahlia’s grief begins to lift, her guilt and confusion remain. River desperately wants to be the one who mends what’s been broken—but with a past that refuses to stay buried, is it possible for their future to begin?

Excerpt Chapter 2 from CONNECTED (Connections #1)
RIVER POV
Time is Running Out

The set ends so I walk over behind Garrett to lean my guitar against the wall. I pull
my shirt up to wipe the sweat off my forehead. It’s hotter than shit in here and I need a
drink. Garrett laughs, tipping his head back to swallow the beer he somehow already has.
“You going to grab a drink? I’ll take another,” he says as he downs the rest of his
beer. “And, dude, wear this. Seriously man, your hair looks like shit,” he says throwing
his beanie at me.
I move closer and shove him a little and put the hat on my head. “Shut the fuck up,
you should talk.”
I hop off the stage and my sister rushes over to me. “River, I need you to take me
home as soon as the last set is over. I have someone meeting me back at my apartment.”
I shake my head, knowing it must be a guy. “Yeah yeah, I will Bell, but really can’t
you get a boyfriend that has some manners? You know, like actually picks his date up
and maybe even takes her out? And at a decent hour?”
She rolls her eyes. “All guys aren’t like you, big brother. Nice beanie,” she teases
before disappearing back into the crowd.
As I walk through the jam-packed room, some brunette chick I think looks familiar
asks me if I want to grab a drink in private. I kindly refuse, telling her I need to refuel
before my next set. She’s still talking when I motion toward the bar to signal that I’m
moving away. As my eyes flash across the bar, they’re suddenly drawn to a beautiful girl
standing against it. And she’s looking directly at me.
I start walking toward her, leaving behind the brunette who is still talking. As I stare
at the beautiful girl, I think, “I want her.” Tall, slim, long blonde hair that’s pulled away
from her face. But it’s her eyes that get me—the way she’s looking at me. Shit, I’ve
talked to about a dozen chicks tonight, but she is the only one who has me interested.
As I stare back at her I’m feeling like she’s not just any girl. Not just a girl to have
sex with. I’m actually having a fucking conversation with myself. I can’t figure out what’s
going on in my own head.
I try not to smile, but I know she’s checking me out. Fuck, why’d I put this hat on? I
quickly pull it off and comb my fingers through my hair. I can’t take my eyes off her and
I feel like I want to knock everyone out of my way to get to her.
When I finally reach the bar, I stand right in front of her. For some weird reason I
feel the urge to touch her, but instead I shove my hands in my pockets. She’s smiling at
me and I smile right back. This girl is hot. Her eyes still haven’t left mine this whole
time, so I decide to break the ice by calling her out. “Were you staring at me?”
She pouts her lips and rolls her eyes. Shit, that look gets me.
“No, I was just looking for my friend while I waited on my drinks. You just
happened to be in my line of vision.”
I stifle my laugh and say, “That look was hot.” I want to say, “You’re hot,” but I
don’t—not yet anyway.
I can tell she’s trying not to laugh. If she does, I know I have her. Her phone rings
and her smile fades. “Why would you think I was looking at you, anyway?”
The person beside her walks away and I secure my place next to her. I toss my hat on
the counter and lean against the bar, my eyes never leaving hers. I answer in the most
honest way I can. “Because I was staring at you, hoping you were staring back.”
I don’t want to fuck this up so I decide to be the guy Bell always tells me I am—the
guy with manners. Then I say what I should have said first. “With all this talk about who
was staring at whom I think we forgot the basics, I’m River,” I say as I extend my hand.
She reaches hers out. Hey, I get to touch her. But she quickly pulls her hand back
before I get to grasp it and accidentally knocks a dude’s beer over. The asshole gives her
a dirty look and swears. I know I have to step in because this guy is out of line. I gently
guide her out of my way and try to control myself as I say, “Sorry man, just an accident,
but let me buy you another.” I hand him a ten, “Buy two.” I hope he takes the money and
leaves. Lucky for him he does, because otherwise I might deck him.
I turn around to find the girl smiling at me and sliding one of her beers my way. I
start to drink it and she says, “Thank you, that guy sure as shit wasn’t happy with me. In
fact he kind of acted like an asshole.” I can’t help but laugh mid-sip, almost spitting the
beer out of my mouth. Not cool.
Not able to resist any longer, I run my finger over her smooth bare shoulder and lock
my eyes on hers. “You’re more than welcome.”
She just barely shudders and steps back. I’m pretty sure she’s interested in me so I
step closer, not wanting to break our connection. “Now, where were we? Do we need to
start over?” I ask, looking into her eyes.
“We were introducing ourselves,” she says smiling.
“Okay, so let’s try again. I’m River and you are . . .?”
“I’m not sure you need to know that information right now. I’m kind of thinking you
might be a stalker,” she teases.
I laugh. I’m all about game playing but I’m not ready to play. I really want to get to
know this girl, and I’m pretty sure the feeling is mutual, so I avoid dropping the canned
line I might have used on another girl and say, “You’re not serious, are you beautiful
girl?”

Connections #2 by Kim Karr
Colorblind

Close your eyes and you can imagine what it was like. Hot, sticky, crowded. Smoke,
flashing screens, and lighters flickering. Fans screaming, laughing, clapping, and crying.
Bodies pushing, shoving, trying to catch a glimpse. Everyone wanting to see the stage—
the lights, the equipment, the musician himself.
He was running back and forth singing, headbanging, and playing his guitar. The
lyrics were jumbled. His movements out of sync. The sound of the bass thumped through
the crowd so loud my body vibrated with every wrong note played. I just wanted it to
end.
Nick Wilde had opened for the Counting Crows at the Hollywood Bowl. It was his
second chance— and he blew it. The crowd was exhilarated at the start of his first song
and he owned the stage but it didn’t last long. By the third song he was improvising,
pulling notes, and forgetting words. He was lost in his own trance, soaked in alcohol, and
no one could help him…not Xander, not my mother, and definitely not me. “Mr. Jones”
started playing before he even finished his fourth song…and he never played onstage
again.
Music was his soul. Music was in all of our souls. When we were younger he taught
us everything he could…how to play, to sing, the right way to command a stage. We
knew every song by every artist. We traveled to concert after concert. Music was his life
and it became ours.
But he wasn’t happy just playing. He had a dream—he wanted to be famous. And
somewhere along the way his dream became an obsession. I’ll give it to him, he got
further than most do. By the age of nineteen he had been signed by a label and cut his
first album. But after a disappointing run they released him. He spent the next fifteen
years working the circuit—clubs, churches, weddings, birthday parties, as he waited for
another big break. And then, just like that, he blew his golden opportunity.
Everything in our life changed after that. The drinking got worse, Grandpa came
around more to check on us, and Mom went back to work. Every day left another kink in
his chain as he lived in his own world. I was sixteen when his plan A became my plan B
and, just like him, at a young age, I cut my first album. But unlike him I had Xander. He
wasn’t going to let me fail. The band’s album had a slow start but after a year of touring,
it started to gain popularity.
I remember the first time the Wilde Ones graced a real stage. We were restless. We
had been sitting around for hours waiting. When we were finally up we strutted
confidently across the stage like we had in rehearsal, but, really, we were nervous as hell.
The lights were much brighter and the audience so much bigger than we were used to.
When the guys started to play, soft, barely audible words flew out of my mouth so fast I
forgot to breathe. The band was drowning me out and I knew it. Looking around, I
adjusted the microphone height and took in the crowd. They were cheering me on with
such enthusiasm that my voice finally soared over them. It was the same voice I’d grown
up with, the one my dad had fostered. It was raw and present and soulful, and, in that
moment, my music came alive. The crowd went crazy and just like that my life changed
again.
Xander struck while the iron was hot. He arranged to go on tour. That was the
beginning of the end for me. We started out small. Smaller venues, shitty hotels, crappy
food, and a lot of drinking. We opened for band after band and the relationships I
made…they kept me going, that and being up on that stage doing what I loved…it kept
me going, wanting to make my dad proud…yeah, that, too.
But touring was a constant infringement on my personal space. I hated the cramped
quarters, lack of privacy, constant strict schedule, never being in the same city for more
than two nights, people following you everywhere, people always wanting something
from you. Even the girls throwing themselves at you got old. It was the longest year of
my life, but I did it for him because somewhere along the way his dream morphed into
mine. What I came to realize was that his dream wasn’t mine—my dad thought being on
tour meant you had made it. His dream was about being famous. Mine is about the music.
As the venues got bigger so did the crowds, the fanfare, and I could see how you
could get lost in it, caught up in it—but I was determined not to end up like my father. He
was addicted to the fame. I’m addicted to the creative process. I hope that difference
between us is enough. The tour ended and we wrote, we played around LA, and as time
passed life was good. But I had managed to put off cutting another album long enough.
This time I was doing it for the band and for my brother and for me—because I love the
music. Cutting the album—that’s the fun part. It’s the promoting I dreaded, at least until
the day I saw her through the glass. The girl who inspired our song “Once in a Lifetime,”
the girl Xander always referred to as my muse, the girl who stole my heart one night and
then crushed it at the very same time.
She was as beautiful as I remembered and with one glance she took my breath away.
She walked my way, pulling a suitcase behind her, and my heart skipped a beat. I knew
immediately she was the one sent to interview me and suddenly any negativity I had
about doing press was gone. I couldn’t help but watch her. I wanted her unlike anyone I
had ever wanted before. I had to stifle a laugh when her briefcase fell off the top of her
suitcase and she glanced around to see who saw. I wanted to yell, “Only me and don’t
worry because everything about you is sexy as fuck.”
I rushed to grab the door for her, but she pushed it forward and fell into me—not that
I minded in the least. I’d catch her over and over. There wasn’t a thing about her that I
didn’t remember from the first time we met and even the awkwardness of the moment
brought me to full attention. When her body pressed against mine, I knew in that
instant…this time I wasn’t letting her get away so easily. I’d go on a thousand tours to
have her in my life—there was just something about her, a light in her eyes that made
everything wrong feel right. And just like my dad, I got a second chance—it was her. But
unlike him, I wasn’t going to blow it.
When she extended her hand and said, “Hello, I’m Dahlia London from Sound
Music. I’m so sorry I’m late,” I knew she had to be mine
